After the 2 p.m. announcement, that nearly 34 million cars were being recalled for defective airbags, officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say traffic on the vehicle-identification number page surged to 598,000 searches, up from an average of 9,662 per day last week.
While consumers were urged to go to the site, officials say owners will still have to wait several days to hear which models are affected.
