FDA Warns Public About Dangerous Topical Acne Products

Posted on behalf of Harbin & Burnett on Jun 27, 2014 in Defective Products

On Wednesday, June 25, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the public that certain over-the-counter topical acne products could case rare, but potentially life-threatening allergic reactions and severe irritation.

According to the FDA, the hypersensitivity reactions differ from the regular skin irritations that may occur such as redness, burning, dryness and more. A hypersensitive reaction could cause throat tightness, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the eyes, lips or tongue.

Based on the information reported to the FDA, the hypersensitive actions may be triggered by the products active or inactive ingredients, or a combination of the both. The reactions could occur within minutes of using the product or up to a day after use.

The following products are of concern:

  • Proactiv
  • Neutrogena
  • MaxClarity
  • Oxy
  • Aveeno
  • Clean & Clear

The over-the-counter acne products are available as gels, lotions, face washes, cleansing pads, face scrubs and more.

Manufacturers of the products are being given the option to add label directions for sensitivity testing for new users. The FDA is encouraging new users to apply a small amount of the product to one or two areas for three days, if no discomfort occurs then they may use the product according to the directions on the products package.

Consumers should avoid using an OTC topical acne product if they experience any hypersensitivity reaction. Consumers should also discontinue use if they develop hives or itching.

The FDA intends to continue monitoring this issue and will work with manufacturers regarding any future label changes that would address potentially hazardous reactions.

If you or someone you know has been injured due to a product that was mislabeled or failed to adequately warn users of potential health hazards, the victim may be entitled to compensation. At Harbin Law we believe that companies who fail to protect the public from danger need to be held accountable for their actions.
