In a tragic car wreck on I-85 northbound, four individuals died on Wednesday night. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. at the 68th mile market in Wellford.
South Carolina Patrol troopers were first on the scene. They reported that the driver was traveling south in the northbound lane. The driver is also suspected to have been speeding.
State police attempted to intercept the vehicle to get the driver to stop. Officials used their lights and sirens and attempted to pull up parallel next to the driver.
Those attempts to derail the driver failed and before officials could stop the vehicle, the driver caused an accident. Six vehicles in total became mired in the accident.
Emergency medical personnel from multiple counties, including Wellford, Duncan, and Spartanburg County all responded to the accident. Witnesses reported that the accident was so horrific that no one could have survived that.
The Spartanburg County Coroners Office announced that four people died in the wreck while many others who were injured were transported to the local hospitals.
The victims of the accident were identified as:
- Martha Marie Diaz (21)
- Josh Leroy Smith (60)
- Shiree Lynette Whitaker (22)
- Edwin Ferguson (27)
All four of the residents lived in Spartanburg County. It is not clear what caused the vehicle traveling the wrong way on the highway to switch lanes. Law enforcement officials are still investigating the cause of the accident.
Some of the vehicles involved in the accident caught on fire and began to burn. Unexpected car accidents that change the lives of families in the blink of an eye are devastating and traumatic.
