Report Says South Carolina Has Third-Worst Drivers in Nation

Posted on behalf of Harbin & Burnett on Jan 10, 2017 in Auto Accidents

highway trafficSouth Carolina was ranked third in CarInsuranceComparison.com's annual report on the worst drivers by state. The Palmetto State finished in the top 10 in four of the five metrics in the report, including first for fatality rate per 100 million miles traveled.

The report ranked South Carolina in the top 10 for these metrics:

  • Percentage of fatal accidents involving alcohol (10th)
  • Percentage of fatal accidents related to speeding (7th)
  • Pedestrian and bicyclist deaths per 100,000 people (7th)

The only good news from the report is that South Carolina was ranked 34th for percentage of fatal crashes involving failure to obey traffic signals, wear seat belts or drive with a valid license.

CarInsuranceComparison.com used data from a 2014 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study to rank each state on the different metrics. Rankings for each metric were added to come up with a final score, with lower scores equating to higher rankings.

CarInsuranceComparison.com has created the report the past five years, with the goal of educating drivers about reckless driving behaviors common in their states.

Unfortunately, this is the fourth year in a row South Carolina has finished in the top five in the report.

However, there is disagreement about whether or not the high number of traffic fatalities in South Carolina is caused by drivers. The high number of rural roads is a bigger factor than poor drivers, says AAA Carolinas spokeswoman Tiffany Wright.

In 2015, 82 percent of fatal crashes in South Carolina occurred on rural roads, while the national average for rural-road fatalities is just 51 percent. These roads are often more dangerous than roads in cities, as they lack safety features and offer drivers fewer chances to correct mistakes.
