Pedal error accidents are a growing problem across the country. So much so that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a safety advisory to educate motorists on ways to prevent the potentially dangerous accidents.
This type of crash can cause safety concerns for vehicle occupants, surrounding motorists and property. The auto accident attorneys at Harbin & Burnett have years of experience representing those who have been injured in a variety of accidents, including pedal error crashes.

The NHTSA considers a pedal error as a crash that occurs when the driver steps on the accelerator when aiming for the brake, when the drivers foot slides off the brake onto the accelerator or when the driver intends to apply the brake but steps on both the brake and accelerator at the same time.
The result is sudden vehicle acceleration that happens so quickly that the driver does not have time to react and slow down the vehicle before an accident occurs.
According to the NHTSA, these types of accidents most often happen when vehicles are travelling at very slow speeds, like in a parking lot or a driveway.
A NHTSA study shows that these accidents occur almost 44 times a day across the country. Although they can affect all drivers, drivers under the age of 20 and over the age of 65 are most often involved in this type of incident.
The administration recommends a few tips to help prevent these pedal error accidents:
- Get familiar with your vehicle and its pedals, mirrors and steering wheel.
- Always aim for the center of the brake pedal.
- Avoid distractions while driving.
- Always be cautious and alert to your surroundings.
- Wear the appropriate shoes while driving, like flat-soled and light-weight shoes.
