On Tuesday, in two separate incidents on Hilton Head island, lifeguards ordered swimmers out of the water due to sharks swimming close to shore. This is a fairly common occurrence along the South Carolina coast during the summer and usually the threat of a shark attack is quite rare. Fortunately, no one was injured this time.
But it does point out the need to be aware of your surroundings and to play close attention to your children. Sharks can swim in extremely shallow water. She even if your children are wading in water below the knees, you need to pay attention. Most sharks are not that aggressive. But since it is difficult to identify a shark species in the surf, assume the worst and get out of the water. And certainly obey any lifeguard instructions regarding conditions, whether sharks, rip-tides, or other dangers.
Enjoy your time at the beach, but also be observant.
