Takata Airbags: Largest Auto Recall in History

Since 2008, 36 million vehicles globally have been recalled for a potentially deadly Takata airbag. The automakers at the heart of what is now being called the largest automotive recall to date include Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Daihatsu.
Last weeks recall included 11.5 million vehicles that have been equipped with the defective product that has been shown to rupture abnormally, violently explode and send shards of metal throughout a vehicle, increasing the risk for injury during an auto accident.
Six deaths and more than 100 injuries have been tied to faulty Takata airbags. However, no injuries have been reported to date in relation to the most recent recall. Automakers are describing this recall as precautionary and investigative.
Though no one knows for certain what the root cause of the defect is, the automakers have all conducted independent studies in hopes of finding a resolution for this catastrophe.
Their findings show that often the casing of the inflators were not airtight. This could potentially allow moisture into the inflator and lead to a destabilization of the explosive chemical needed to inflate the airbag.
Automakers have been forced to take the recalls into their own hands because Takata, one of the worlds largest suppliers of automobile safety equipment, has not taken full responsibility for the defects and has failed to call for one cohesive recall.
Takata is maintaining that any problems with the product are the result of manufacturing failure, not design flaw.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has accused Takata of moving too slowly in solving the problem. The regulator is charging the corporation $14,000 per day until they speed up the process and identify a solution.
Takata and automakers are struggling to keep up with the demand for replacement parts.
