April is prime tornado time in South Carolina. Every year since 1950, South Carolina has averaged approximately 11 tornadoes per year, with most of the tornadoes in April and May. Although South Carolina tornadoes tend to be weaker and more short-lived than the ones in the Midwest, they are still dangerous. In South Carolina, due to the hilly terrain and trees, sightlines are significantly reduced in many places. As a result, there is often limited time to seek shelter. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and quickly changing weather conditions.
The CDC has posted tornado safety tips here: Tornado Safety.
Enjoy the warmer weather we are experiencing, but remain vigilant to changing conditions.
