United States Labor Department Releases Job Search Times For Older Workers

In a report recently released by the United States Department of Labor, it has been revealed that in 2013, the average length of time that workers over the age of 50 years old spent looking for a new job was 53 weeks.

When compared to that of a teenager (10 weeks or less), the issue of elderly workers being unable to cope with these new work place realities is quickly becoming an area of rapid expansion for many mental health professionals, who are often called upon by these older workers to help them find the determination to continue looking for employment.

In a statement recently released by Nadya Fouad, department chair in educational psychology:

"Thirty years ago you chose something you were interested in and matched it to a career and there you were for the rest of your life. With globalization, recession, technology and downsizing, thats not true anymore.

The social contract has changed," she added.

With this in mind, older workers are also having to deal with a rapidly changing work place, where in many cases, employers view older workers as over qualified and simply not worth investing in due to the possibility of them retiring earlier than their younger competition.

To help combat this issue, many psychologists are now helping older individuals that are seeking employment to realize that they simply may not be able to obtain a position that is the equivalent in pay and stature prior to them leaving the workforce.

While this is difficult for many to embrace, by resetting these expectations, it is helping these individuals to progressively come to terms with this new reality.
