Yesterday, Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court. Kennedy was one of the more centrist Justices, and was often the swing vote in many of the 5-4 decisions we have seen in the last few years. His vote was crucial to the Left in cases such as the one that gave gays the right to marry, Obergfell, and also crucial to the Right in cases such as Citizens United, which removed restriction on capaign spending by corporations. We fully expect that he will be replaced by a far more conservative Judge. Whether that is good or bad depends on your political beliefs. But regardless of your beliefs, it will further the polarization of the country as the voice of the middle, or moderate, grows more faint.
